Flexible periotomes are used to sever the periodontal ligament and protect the surrounding bone and soft tissue, while extracting a tooth atraumatically. The tip of the periotom flexes and adapts to the shape of the root surface as it is driven down the periodontal ligament. Flexible periotomes can be used by hand or in conjuction with a mallet to achieve optimal results.
